Welcome to the Metropolitan New York College Career Planning Officer's Association. MNYCCPOA is a professional organization consisting of career counselors representing more than 60 colleges in the metropolitan New York area. Founded in 1960 with 49 charter members, MNYCCPOA's membership has grown to approximately 200 strong. Its mission is to promote professional growth and development, and provide opportunities to exchange ideas, information and creative solutions concerning career development issues. In May, 2006, the membership voted an overwhelming approval to updating the name of our organization. We replaced “Placement” with “Career Planning” to more accurately reflect our mission. The new name, Metropolitan New York College Career Planning Officer's Association, resulted in a new – but similar – acronym, MNYCCPOA, along with a new web site address, www.MNYCCPOA.org, and a new name for our newsletter, MNYCCPOST. Membership in MNYCCPOA is open to all those who are working in the field of career development at colleges and universities . Membership benefits include invitations to all events, access to membership directory, e-mails about employment opportunities as well as the opportunity to participate in programming activities. We especially invite graduate students who are thinking about entering the field of career counseling to join MNYCCPOA at a reduced membership rate. It is an excellent way to network and learn from professionals already in the field. Meetings are held three times a year in the months of October/November, January and May. They are held on college campuses or at corporate sites in the metropolitan area. These programs focus on educating the membership about current career trends and developments in the field. Leaders in the education, non-profit and corporate sectors are invited as guest speakers and panelists. MNYCCPOA meetings also provide members with the opportunity to network and informally share ideas and information. The themes of some recent MNYCCPOA programs have included: “Careers in Media: The Television, Radio and Film Industry Revealed,” “Careers in Museums and Other Cultural Institutions,” “The Economic Crisis… the College Student… the Impact,” and “Branding Yourself Through Social Media.” For more details on the programs planned for this year, click the Programs section of this web site. Members are encouraged to become actively involved in the organization by participating in program planning committees or by joining the various standing committees of the association. Some committees include: the Communications Committee, the Membership Committee and the Alva Cooper Awards Committee. Members are also encouraged to write articles for MNYCCPOST, the association's online newsletter, participate on a panel presentation or conduct workshops at meetings. A seven member executive board, elected bi-annually by the membership, governs MNYCCPOA. The Executive Board consists of the President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Director of Programs and Historian. The board meets regularly to ensure that MNYCCPOA members receive quality programming and that the organization continues to grow and remain vibrant. Business meetings are incorporated into every MNYCCPOA program to provide members with the opportunity to raise issues, offer suggestions, and receive updates on executive board activities. We welcome you to join MNYCCPOA and become an active member of our organization. If you would like to apply for membership, download the membership application form in the Application section. If you would like to learn more about MNYCCPOA, its activities and programming, see the other sections of this web site or contact me at ohaganj@stjohns.edu. I look forward to seeing you at our next MNYCCPOA program.
